Landlord keeps using his key to enter tenant's apartment without notice, making her fear she'll find him inside at any moment: ‘I don't feel safe in my own home ’

Home doesn't feel like home when someone else can walk through the front door at any moment.

What began as a few surprise maintenance visits quickly turned into a pattern that left one tenant constantly on edge. Her landlord repeatedly entered the apartment without warning, even while she was home, making her question whether the behavior was legal. Unable to afford moving, she turned to Reddit for advice on protecting her privacy without risking eviction.

I'm a tenant and could never imagine walking home to find the landlord inside my house trying to fix something he never mentioned. At this point, the reason why he's in the apartment is besides the point: he shouldn't be there under any circumstance without telling the tenant first. I can even assume this is trespassing and invasion of private property.

But, at the same time, I understand the weird position that the girl is in. Since she doesn't want to ruin the bond she has with him, she's not saying a word to him, and can't even change the lock to keep him from entering because this would cause some sort of problem. The same with suing him or something like that: this would cause a problem between the two, which is going to jeopardize her lease and her living there.

However, having a conversation with the man and telling him about not entering without discussing it first, or at least mentioning it to her, is not okay. Although he's the owner of the apartment, the home belongs to the tenant, as she pays every month so she can live there. The landlord should be the one realizing that what he's doing is absolute nonsense and that there should be another way to check and fix the issue in the house.
